Customer Resident Engineer (2019)

The Steering Column and Intermediate Shaft Engineering group at Nexteer Automotive is looking for an experienced Resident Engineer to work in a dynamic team environment, representing Nexteer at the customer location and implementing designs for customer vehicle programs.  Candidates have the opportunity to work with a high caliber technical staff and world class test and validation facilities to ensure successful program execution.

An ideal candidate will be both analytical and hands-on and possess a high level of interpersonal skills to enable effective collaboration with customers, suppliers, and other Nexteer staffs.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Resident at GM Vehicle Engineering Center in Warren, MI with approximately one day per week in Saginaw
  • Serve as interface between Nexteer and GM Engineering
  • Lead Nexteer/GM PDT’s
  • Work proactively to identify and resolve issues
  • Release designs into customer’s systems
  • Coordinate engineering changes
  • Support pre-production build programs
  • Support program launches at customer sites
  • Support investigation and resolution of quality and warranty issues


Job Requirements:

  • 3 years experience in product design or engineering role.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering theory and principles of design.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with customers, suppliers, and other functional staffs.
  • High level of analytical ability and perseverance to solve unusual and difficult problems.
  • Knowledge of the principles of project management.
  • Understanding of GD&T
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer application experience (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).


  • Experience as a customer Resident Engineer.
  • Experience with GM vehicle program and launch processes.
  • Knowledge of steering column product design and/or manufacturing processes.
  • Strong problem solving capability with Design for Six Sigma, Shainin Red X, or Six Sigma Greenbelt certification.



Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred, other Engineering degrees considered
