About the Role
As Chief Tax Officer, you will lead all domestic and international tax strategies and compliance for the company. You’ll collaborate closely with finance, treasury, legal, and operational teams, ensuring that our tax positions are not only compliant but also optimized for efficiency and effectiveness. Your role will also involve managing external service providers to align with our tax strategies. You’ll serve as a key business partner and trusted advisor across the organization, providing insights and guidance on critical business initiatives including mergers and acquisitions.
This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is a member of the finance leadership team. You will be located at Nexteer’s Corporate Headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI, but should expect frequent travel to the US Technical Center in Saginaw, MI as well as global travel throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and Manage the Corporate Tax Function: Provide strategic leadership, direction and management of the Corporate Tax department, including oversight and support of Divisional tax staff to ensure alignment with the company’s overall tax strategy.
- Oversee Global Tax Management: Manage all aspects of global tax management, including compliance across multiple jurisdictions within the company’s legal entity structure. This includes overseeing transfer pricing with international subsidiaries, managing intercompany transactions such as management fees and royalties, and developing and executing tax planning strategies that respond to evolving jurisdictional regulations.
- Strategic Tax Planning and Advisory: Conduct thorough research and analysis to provide senior management with strategic insights and recommendations on the tax implications of current and future company activities, transactions, and business initiatives.
- Ensure Accurate Tax Accounting: Oversee accounting for income taxes (under IAS 12) across U.S. and international subsidiaries, establishing and maintaining a robust internal control structure to support tax reporting.
- Monitor Global Cash Taxes: Estimate and monitor annual cash taxes on a global basis, providing accurate forecasts to support financial planning.
- Direct Tax Compliance and Accounting: Lead all US federal, state, and international income tax compliance, planning and tax accounting activities, ensuring accuracy and alignment with the company’s financial goals.
- Represent the Company in Tax Audits: Act as the company’s representative during tax audits conducted by external regulatory agencies, safeguarding the company’s interests.
- Liaise with Government Agencies and Legal Counsel: Facilitate effective communication with government agencies and in-house legal counsel on tax-related matters, ensuring compliance and minimizing risk.
- Oversee Tax Accruals and Calculations: Supervise the preparation of tax accruals and estimated tax calculations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial reporting standards.
- Direct Tax Return Preparation and Analysis: Oversee the preparation and analysis of direct sales, use, and property tax returns, ensuring compliance and optimization.
- Manage the Global Tax Budget: Oversee management of global tax budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and alignment with the company’s strategic objectives.
- Liaison with Operating and Accounting Teams: Serve as primary contact for operating management on tax issues and collaborate closely with accounting staff to address tax accounting matters.
- Maintain Internal Controls: Ensure that internal controls over accounting for income taxes are operational, effective, and compliant with internal and external requirements.
Qualifications
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a corporate tax department or substantial experience supporting corporate and partnership clients.
- Previous experience with a large public accounting firm and automotive, technology, or manufacturing industries is highly desirable.
- Proven experience in supervising and developing others, with a track record of increasing responsibility in managing direct reports.
- Deep knowledge of corporate, partnership, and international tax matters, along with a strong background in income tax accounting.
- Global mindset and ability to work effectively with diverse, geographically dispersed teams, demonstrating cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to simplify and convey complex tax requirements and strategies to key stakeholders.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, taxation, or a related field, or minimum of 10 years of equivalent experience.
- MBA or CPA is highly desirable
