Research and Development New Product Systems Engineer

 

Nexteer Research and Development applies Nexteer’s motion control expertise to innovate next-generation products for both automotive and non-automotive applications. We are looking for a candidate who can apply systems engineering expertise to support this activity. The right candidate will advance new products from initial idea through concept definition and prototype build, with responsibilities ranging from up-front simulation to hardware development. The candidate will work with multiple supporting teams and stakeholders, including Nexteer technical experts, Nexteer business and finance analysts, and external customers.  This position will be located in Auburn Hills, MI.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Apply systems engineering expertise to support development of new products and systems incorporating mechanical, electrical, and software elements
  • Perform a broad range of engineering activities based on skills and background, ranging from mechanical design and analysis to algorithm development
  • Work to gather and define initial ideas for new products
  • Synthesize new product requirements from benchmarking, customer needs, historical data, industry standards
  • Perform trade studies to analyze alternative approaches to new products
  • Support market assessment and business case analysis to establish financial viability of new products
  • Develop and analyze concept designs for new products to meet requirements including performance, packaging, cost, weight
  • Develop both virtual (simulation) and hardware prototypes of new products

 

Job Requirements:

  • Experience with automotive systems containing mechanical and electronic hardware and software (e.g. ABS/ESC, powertrain control, air suspension, etc.)
  • Experience with systems engineering including requirements development and verification
  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink including control algorithm development
  • Simulation experience in one or more of the following areas: powertrain performance and fuel economy, vehicle dynamics, multibody dynamics / mechanisms, electrical systems, structural mechanics
  • Experience in design and analysis of mechanical and/or electrical hardware with some CAD capability preferred
  • Understanding of CAN and experience with CAN tools preferred (Vector CANape, Vehicle SPY, or equivalent)
  • Understanding of basic project management principles and the ability to apply to own work to manage deliverables and timing
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment
  • Highly motivated self-starter with a strong desire to have a significant impact on future products
  • Interest in increasing skills in a variety of areas
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

 

Education Requirements:

BS degree with 3+ years experience or MS degree with 2+ years experience

Majors:  Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
