2019 Environmental Summer Internship

The objective of the Student Programs at Nexteer Automotive is to select students with high potential and provide them with "real world" work experiences. Work assignments expose students to many of the company’s products, processes, procedures, problems, resources, staff areas and people so that they become aware of the career opportunities at Nexteer Automotive. Assignments are designed to assimilate acquired classroom education with actual hands-on work experience in a technical environment. In addition, Nexteer Automotive gains the opportunity to find new talent to enhance productivity.

 

Reporting Requirements (at a minimum):

  • Discussions with Eng/Fac staff as needed to complete the job tasks
  • Weekly Updates of all project work at the combined Tuesday Morning Staff Mtgs
  • Monthly in-depth updates at the Env Staff Mtg
  • Formal report and presentation to be completed one week prior to last day of work.  Date and time to be determined later.
  • Will participate in and attend all Facilities/Environmental Group Staff Mtgs and Events

 

Project Descriptions:

It is the responsibility of the Summer Intern to complete some of the following environmental projects with assistance as needed from the Env Group:

 

  • ROP Equipment Maps (and continue weekly PM/usage data collection, recording and tracking)
  • RICE MACT
  • Conference Room Layouts
  • Assist with Recycling programs
  • Assist with Stack Testing at the Powerhouse
  • Water Bottle/Pop Can collection and Recycling (glass bottles from MetLabs?)
  • Coordinate weekly Do-All electronics Pickups
  • Take MDEQ Stormwater class to become a certified stormwater operator, thereby being able to do daily/weekly/monthly checks – back up to Steve
  • Post-Earth Day info on the Global Environmental Sharepoint site
  • Assist with the development of programs for recycling/sustainability in the plants based on production processes. 
    • Investigate materials coming in and out of significant departmental processes
    • Based on investigation results, create a systematic approach to increase recycling
    • Implement a tracking method to measure progress
  • Assist with Crushed Concrete testing and re-use on site, and to work with Facilities on testing and evaluating volumes of concrete to be removed.
  • Assist with preparation of CDP report
  • Weekly waste area inspections
  • Assist with characterization and disposal of obsolete materials on site.
  • Work with Waste Engineer to develop alternate recyclers for our byproducts
  • Work with Recycling Engineer to develop alternate recycling processes
  • Update Global Environmental, Facilities and Utilities Sharepoint sites and create new Sharepoint sites as needed.
  • Microsoft Office – Work, Excel, Outlook, Sharepoints

 

Associated Projects:

  • Cover for Environmental and/or Facilities Engineers as needed
  • Assist the existing Env & Fac students with their projects on an as needed basis

 

Requirements:

  • Must have cumulative 2.7 GPA
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week
  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in engineering
