Core Systems Engineer Function Owner (2022)

Automotive megatrends in the areas of software, electrification, mobility, and connectivity are causing vehicle manufacturers to have increasing needs for advanced steering features.  To meet this, Nexteer is developing reusable core system designs and requirements and has a need for core systems engineers who become experts in the building blocks to support this increasing feature content.  The core systems engineer will work cross functionally with multiple internal teams (e.g. application teams, software, requirements, architecture, mechanical, validation) on the core design that will be used for applications.  The ideal candidate has a multi-discipline understanding of software, electrical, and mechanical designs, along with systems engineering and project planning skills.  



  • Provide technical leadership and review board representation for core system design
  • Update and optimize the system designs including varying / evolving customer needs in terms of features through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering
  • Responsible for core system requirements and design
  • Provide assistance to verification team for understanding of requirements and design
  • Diagnosis of vehicle and bench performance issues through data-based root cause analysis
  • Interfaces with other Nexteer functional and application stakeholders to develop optimum implementation
  • Supports effort to improve reusability and configurability of core system functions
  • Support ISO-26262 safety assessments, occasional customer audits, and process updates
  • Stays abreast of new technology, potentially representing Nexteer in industry


Required Skills:

  • Excellent problem solving techniques including software analysis
  • Enjoy evaluating vehicle steering systems and possess a valid driver license
  • Excellent communication skills and a desire to work with people
  • High degree of organization, accuracy, and time management skills
  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (CAN, CAN FD, Flexray) and CAN tools
  • Understanding of engineering simulations/calculations using MATLAB/Simulink
  • General knowledge of systems engineering principles and processes
  • General controls knowledge for steering system development and debug


Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of core fields (mechanical, electronics and controller hardware and software)
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics (steering, braking, suspension, driveline), mechanical systems, electronic systems, and controller hardware and software
  • General understanding of software code language.
  • Knowledge of model based systems engineering philosophy (MBSE)
  • Basic knowledge of IBM Jazz RTC suite tool, including Doors Next Gen (DNG) and Change and Configuration Management.
  • Eagerness to learn new tools
  • Electric power steering experience
  • Knowledge in DFMEA, ISO 26262, ASPICE


Education and Experience:

  • Required Bachelor’s in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with experience in automotive systems


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
