Nexteer Automotive is looking for an Electrical Applications Engineer with a diverse set of skills who will enjoy developing, planning, and releasing EPS (Electric Power Steering) software. The primary focus of this position is to lead the elicitation of customer requirements, clearly communicate to and collaborate with internal teams to implement these requirements into software released to the customer. The ideal candidate would enjoy programing and troubleshooting microcontroller systems (EPS), while performing development that improves software features and overall reliability. This candidate would also enjoy working within a team-orientated environment and being provided the challenge of troubleshooting complex software solutions to real world applications.


In this role you will:

  • Be an integral contributor to a team of highly motivated engineers in the development of electrical controller modules for advanced steering systems.
  • Act as a facilitator and software engineering interface to an OEM.
  • Coordinate formal releases of embedded software and calibrations for a production EPS sold to the public.
  • Create and release component specifications for software and electrical controllers
  • Interface with software project management and cross-functional teams to meet project deliverables for design, quality, reliability, and cost.
  • Provide input to internal teams developing DFMEAs and system level DVP&Rs.
  • Perform bench-level evaluations on new features and software content.
  • Work with Nexteer prototype operations on delivery of porotypes required for initial OEM vehicle testing.
  • Contribute to problem solving activities regarding complex hardware / software design challenges.


Job Requirements:

  • Educational focus in design / development of electrical systems in hardware and / or software.
  • Experience with embedded system microcontrollers.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Operating Systems and Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Experience performing engineering calculations using Matlab/Simulink and spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel)
  • Excellent communication skills and a desire to work with people
  • Good organization and documentation abilities
  • Must be able to lift / physically move parts weighing up to 35 pounds



  • Experience in automotive engineering with a focus on automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Flexray, etc)
  • Familiarity with Vector Communication tools that apply to CAN networks (CANalyzer, CANape, CANoe)
  • Have a fundamental understanding of the engineering development V model
  • Ability to read software programming in C, C# or Visual Basic
  • Model based design experience using Simulink
  • Fundamental understanding of electronic systems, and computer hardware and software
  • Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems (steering, braking, suspension)
  • Experience with formal problem-solving techniques (i.e. Shainin Red X, DFSS, 3L5Y)
  • Knowledge of system synthesis, analysis, and verification techniques
  • Familiarity with project management processes
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools (IBM Jazz, DOORs)



  • Required – Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Computer Science/Computer Science Engineering
  • Minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 2.7
  • Must have the right to work in the US without sponsorship
