We are looking for a highly self-motivated individual who is ready to take on a technology development and innovation role. The candidate should possess good attention to detail, good mentorship ability, be creative, and possess good time management skills. This position is for research and development, including modeling, simulation, analysis and verification, of electric drive systems, and enforcing the technology development process for various technical projects from research through production implementation. This position allows the candidate to assist in advancing the motor control technology roadmap that both supports the existing Nexteer product line and enables expansion for the next generation products. The candidate will also be responsible for coordinating cross-functional projects with multiple technical groups within the organization, support the organization for all areas of motor control development and develop new motor control system algorithms individually.

This role is focused towards high voltage, high power electric motor drive systems for electric and hybrid vehicle propulsion applications. The ideal candidate would possess strong technical skills that encompass multiple disciplines including familiarity with electromagnetics, electric machine design, and electric motor drive control system modeling and design.



  • Responsible for motor control system analysis, modeling, and design of electric motor drive (motor control) systems for electric and hybrid vehicle propulsion application.
  • Develops mathematical models for electrical machines including induction machines, synchronous machines (PM and reluctance), switched reluctance and flux switching machines and multiphase machines.
  • Design and implements algorithms for control of different electrical machines.
  • Design and implement algorithms targeting loss minimization, utilizing the hardware to its capability and NVH reduction.
  • Responsible for developing sizing tools for electric motor drive systems based on system performance and cost models.
  • Designs and optimizes simultaneous system performance goals through requirements flow down. Understands and creates system and subsystem specifications.
  • Coordinating technical projects pertaining to electric drive systems (motor control and power electronics) with cross-organizational teams.
  • Enforcing the technology development process for technical projects from research through to production implementation.
  • Calibration, testing and validation of motor control system requirements as well as diagnosing and correcting deficiencies in designs and prototypes.
  • Effectively integrates all aspects of a design through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering.
  • Stays abreast of new technology and recent developments and trends in the research and academic arena related to electric motor drive and motion control technologies.
  • Provides technical leadership for projects incorporating complex electromechanical (mechatronic) systems.


Job Requirements

Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of electric motor control and power electronics theory.
  • Strong background in control algorithms like field-oriented control, direct torque control, sensorless control for various electrical machines.
  • Good understanding of motor sensing subsystems (motor position, current measurement etc)
  • Strong background in control theory and signal processing.
  • General competency in all core fields (electronics, electromagnetics, computer hardware and software).
  • Strong analytical (mathematical) background in modeling of electric motor drive (motor control) systems including machines, power converters, sensing subsystems and controller development.
  • Experience with low voltage and high voltage dynamometer testing.
  • Knowledge of system synthesis, analysis and verification techniques.
  • Proven ability to create new products, algorithms, and systems through innovation.
  • Strong computer skills, and knowledge of simulation tools (e.g. Matlab/Simulink) is required.
  • Excellent problem definition and solving techniques as well as good organization and documentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to look at computer screen/monitor for extended periods of time.


Preferred Skills

  • Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems (traction/propulsion, steering, braking, suspension,).
  • 2 plus of experience in traction motor control development
  • 2 plus years of working in high voltage environment



M.S. plus 2 years professional experience (required) OR Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (Preferred) with emphasis in Electric Motor Drives (Motor Control), Power Electronics or Control Systems
