The Nexteer Automotive Steer-by-Wire engineering team continues to grow and evolve as we are working with multiple customers in support of their development of demonstration vehicles and design requirements.  At the same time the team is developing and refining our own production-intent designs for offering on anticipated upcoming requests for new business quotes.  Steer-by-wire technology is an exciting development in the automotive industry, gathering considerable interest from many areas.  It provides significant benefits for both traditional and autonomously-driven vehicles, being a key enabler for the Nexteer Quiet Wheel technology and seamless transitions between autonomous and human drivers.

The Controls Engineer is responsible for algorithm development for the Steer-By-Wire system which includes design, implementation, and verification.  We are looking for a technically skilled and controls focused individual who is well versed in mechatronic modeling and controls.  The successful candidate will have experience with Matlab, Simulink, CAN communication, embedded systems and embedded controls.  In this position, the candidate has the opportunity to develop leading edge technology which can result in patents.  Through the integration of internal and customer dynamic performance requirements the candidate will develop dynamic system models of electric power steering systems, calibrate performance of existing functions, and generate and troubleshoot new algorithms to enhance system performance.  This position interacts with both internal and external customers to ensure deadlines and requirements are met.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design and analysis of the controls of electronic power steering systems using dynamic system modeling and simulation
  • Completes validation of control system requirements
  • Provides technical leadership for projects incorporating complex electromechanical (“Mechatronic”) systems
  • Designs and optimizes multiple system performance goals through requirements flow down
  • Effectively integrates all aspects of system design through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering
  • Tunes vehicle steering characteristics, diagnoses and corrects deficiencies in designs and prototypes
  • Uses rapid prototyping tools for system development
  • Understands and creates system and subsystem specifications
  • Assists in maintaining cost controls
  • Stays abreast of new technology

 

Job Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of relevant job experience
  • Strong programming and simulation skills (with Matlab/Simulink) and experience performing engineering calculations using spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel) is required
  • General competency and experience in vehicle dynamics, mechanical systems, electronic systems, and computer hardware and software is preferred
  • Experience with automatic embedded code generation tools such as the Mathworks toolsets (Real Time Workshop, Autocode Generation, Embedded Coder) is preferred
  • Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems (steering, braking, suspension) is desirable
  • Software programming experience using C, C#, and Visual Basic is desirable
  • Excellent problem solving techniques
  • Knowledge of system synthesis, analysis and verification techniques
  • Good organization and documentation abilities

 

Education:

Required – Masters in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
