Steer by Wire System Technician

The Nexteer Automotive Steer-by-Wire engineering team continues to grow and evolve as we are working with multiple customers in support of their development of demonstration vehicles and design requirements.  At the same time the team is developing and refining our own production-intent designs for offering on anticipated upcoming requests for new business quotes.  Steer-by-wire technology is an exciting development in the automotive industry, gathering considerable interest from many areas.  It provides significant benefits for both traditional and autonomously-driven vehicles, being a key enabler for the Nexteer Quiet Wheel technology and seamless transitions between autonomous and human drivers.

 

Description

  • Build master for demo/prototype vehicles. 
    • Coordinate, track, support mechanics and problem solve.
  • In-vehicle and bench debug and support of electric power steering systems through the use of computer and data acquisition tools
    • Coordinate with Engineering Garage to maintain test vehicles
    • Coordinate with Vehicle Evaluation Center to schedule tests (initial diagnosis of failures, writing of problem resolution reports, monitoring test progress, arranging replacement parts as needed)
    • Perform initial evaluation of Function Test results. 
    • Debug of vehicle installations (loss of ignition, alt-on, communications, and vehicle speed signal)
    • Coordinate special tests (installation of test equipment in cooperation with Test Group, perform tests, collect data, design/coordinate special test fixtures as needed)
    • In vehicle and bench tests and data acquisition using dynamic signal analyzer, oscilloscope, multimeters, and other instrumentation
  • Engineering support of various system test stands
    • Build harnesses for new parts
    • Set up communications tools for new parts
    • Debug problems in new processes or test procedures
  • Update Test Specifications and related software tools
  • Support customer demo ride events
    • Make sure of the demo cars functioning and clean enough for the show
    • Attend the show event and accompany with customer drivers to explain and instruct operations in a demo car
  • Be familiar with system technology to demonstrate and showcase system performance
  • General support of Systems group as needed

 

Qualifications

  • Associates degree, military training, or applicable experience, minimum
  • Basic understanding of electrical and mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of test stand servo systems highly beneficial
  • Knowledge of PC compatible computers and their software
  • Good organizational, communications, and inter-personal skills

 

 

Skills (Current or to be acquired)

  • Configuration and use of SnapMaster and LabView
  • Programming and setup of the Netway interface
  • Test stand operation
  • Knowledge of the various tools to interface with EPS systems (CANape, CAT, KWTool, E-Tool, PalmTool, etc.)
