Systems Engineer - Feature Developer (2019)

The steering industry is experiencing increased demands for new features in steering controllers.  Requests include features related to improvements in comfort and vehicle performance, as well as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), steer-by-wire, and four wheel steering.  The focus of this position is on developing and testing new features/algorithms from the idea conception stage through simulation to vehicle/bench testing.  The work flow involves design of algorithms on Simulink, rapid prototyping, and testing.  The candidate will also be involved in corresponding requirements flow down.  The ideal candidate has experience with MATLAB, Simulink, CAN communication, as well as interest towards doing hands-on work in the vehicle or test bench.  Other focuses include root causing and debugging software so the ability to read C code is desired. This position interacts with both internal and external customers to ensure deadlines and requirements are met.

 

This position requires a Bachelors Degree, but we are very interested  in candidates looking to further their education, possibly with the assistance of Nexteer. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design and testing of the control algorithms/features of steering systems
  • Evaluates vehicle steering characteristics, diagnoses deficiencies in designs and prototypes
  • Uses rapid prototyping tools for system development
  • Creates software feature requirements, including interfaces to other software components
  • Designs and optimizes multiple system performance goals through requirements flow down
  • Completes validation of control system requirements
  • Effectively integrates all aspects of system design through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering
  • Provides technical leadership for projects incorporating complex electromechanical (“Mechatronic”) systems
  • Work with cross functional teams for effective demonstration of new features
  • Assists in maintaining cost controls
  • Stays abreast of new technology
  • Contribute, develop and/or support technologies aligned with the approved technology roadmap

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelors in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is required
  • Experience performing engineering simulations/calculations using MATLAB/Simulink and spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel/Office) is required
  • General controls knowledge is required
  • Some software programming experience using C, C++ is required
  • Excellent problem solving techniques is required
  • Good organization and documentation abilities is required
  • Enjoy driving and evaluating vehicle and possess a valid driver license is required
  • Two or more years of relevant experience is desirable
  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (CAN, CAN FD, Flexray) and Vector CANape is desirable
  • Electric power steering experience is desirable
  • Competency in vehicle system, mechanical systems, and electronic systems is desirable
  • Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems (steering, braking, suspension) is desirable
  • Background in ride and handling of cars is desirable
  • Experience with model-based design, model-in-the-loop testing is desirable
  • Knowledge of classical control theory is desirable
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as the Mathworks toolsets (Real Time Workshop, Autocode Generation, Embedded Coder) and dSpace MicroAutoBox is desirable
  • Experience in DFMEA, IEC 61508, ISO 26262, and MISRA software guidelines is desirable
  • Working knowledge of IBM DOORS is desirable

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
