The objective of the Student Programs at Nexteer Automotive is to select students with high potential and provide them with "real world" work experiences. Work assignments expose students to many of the company’s products, processes and procedures. Assignments are designed to assimilate acquired classroom education with actual hands-on work experience in a technical environment. In addition, Nexteer Automotive gains the opportunity to find new talent to enhance productivity while providing students exposure to full-time career opportunities.

 

Internship Position Introductory Paragraph:

This position in the Materials & Metallurgy Department will allow the Student to assist with materials testing and problem-solving activities in the Corporate Materials Laboratory.  Position typically assists engineering personnel with characterization of various heat treatments, mechanical testing, metallography, failure analysis, and corrosion testing.  Additional time will be spent assisting engineering personnel with coordinating equipment calibrations, maintenance, and administrative work in support of quality systems to maintain accreditations.  In this position, the Student will have the opportunity to work and collaborate with Materials & Metallurgy personnel including management, materials engineers, plant metallurgists, and technicians for a well-rounded experience designed to enhance technical capabilities and leadership skills. Collaboration with other functions outside the group will also be necessary.  Student would be asked to complete other miscellaneous tasks as they arise. 

 

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to organizational & laboratory health & safety policies
  • Design tooling and fixtures
  • Procure engineering samples for testing and measure progress throughout the process in support of departmental efficiency & effectiveness metrics
  • Develop test procedures, as required
  • Learn various sample preparation techniques and prepare samples for testing
  • Perform materials testing of various materials and populate this data into a materials properties database
  • Administrative work related to quality systems documentation
  • Various assignments, tasks, and special projects at the direction of lab management

 

Requirements:

  • Candidate must be attending a 4-year university
  • Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelors in Metallurgy, Materials, Materials Science, or Corrosion Engineering
  • Must have cumulative 2.7 GPA on 4.0 scale
