Position:  SbW Functional Safety Engineer


Nexteer Safety Engineer will apply the ISO26262 functional safety process to systems like Electric Power Steering, Autonomous Steering Systems, and Steer by Wire Systems in development.  The System Safety Engineer supports the full lifecycle of the safety process - from concept and requirements through design and analysis to implementation and testing.  A strong interest and aptitude in embedded systems is required.

This position will be located in Saginaw, MI. 


Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Independently execute system safety activities for assigned projects related to SbW (Steer by Wire) Electric Power Steering applications
  • Independently develop safety requirements at multiple levels
  • Independently execute Safety Analysis such as FTA, FMEDA, and FMEA
  • Independently develop, document, and execute bench and vehicle test procedures including fault injection testing


Required Skills:

  • 3+ years experience in automotive, electronics, safety, embedded software, or mechanical
  • Compile safety case and create safety case reports for SbW (Steer by Wire) and AV (Autonomous Steering) applications
  • Collaborate with safety technical lead to assess impact of single and dual point faults
  • Assess PMHF (probabilistic metric for hardware failure) for SbW programs
  • Assess SPFM (single point fault metric) and LFM (latent fault metric) for SbW programs
  • Awareness of automotive engineering and chassis systems
  • Understanding and application of ISO26262, IEC 61508 and UL4600 standards  
  • Certified Functional Safety Professional
  • Computer skills, especially in spreadsheets and simulation tool
  • Familiarity with automotive embedded systems, hardware, and/or software
  • Excellent organization and documentation abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and a desire to work with people across several project teams


Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of project management processes and tools
  • Knowledge of HARA (Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment)
  • Knowledge of FTA (Fault Tree Analysis) – both Qualitative and Quantitative assessments
  • Familiarity with failure analysis
