The objective of the Student Programs at Nexteer Automotive is to select students with high potential and provide them with "real world" work experiences. Work assignments expose students to many of the company’s products, processes and procedures. Assignments are designed to assimilate acquired classroom education with actual hands-on work experience in a technical environment. In addition, Nexteer Automotive gains the opportunity to find new talent to enhance productivity while providing students exposure to full-time career opportunities.


We are looking for an inquisitive and self-motivated individual who is eager to learn and contribute to advanced technology development in motion control systems. The candidate should possess good attention to detail, be creative and possess good time management skills. This position is for advanced technology development in the area of mechatronics and control for a multitude of motion control products including, but not limited to, electric power steering, and will involve modeling, simulation, implementation, analysis and verification, of motion control systems.



  • Responsible for analysis, modeling, design and implementation of control algorithms for motion control systems.
  • Designs and optimizes simultaneous system performance goals through requirements flow down.
  • Understands and creates system and subsystem specifications.
  • Calibration, testing and validation of control systems requirements as well as diagnosing and correcting deficiencies in designs and prototypes.
  • Effectively integrates all aspects of a design through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering.
  • Stays abreast of new technology and recent developments and trends in the research and academic arena related to automotive motion control technologies.
  • Provides technical leadership for projects incorporating complex electromechanical (mechatronic) systems.
  • Assists in maintaining cost controls through development of cost optimal system designs and architectures.



  • Strong understanding of electromechanical motion control (mechatronic) systems.
  • Experience with control systems engineering and signal processing.
  • Ability to develop analytical (mathematical) models of physical systems.
  • General competency in all core fields (mechanical, electronics, electromagnetics, computer hardware and software).
  • Knowledge of system synthesis, analysis and verification techniques.
  • Proven ability to create new products, algorithms, and systems through innovation.
  • Strong computer skills, and knowledge of simulation tools (e.g. Matlab/Simulink) is required.
  • Excellent problem definition and solving techniques.
  • Good organization and documentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to look at computer screen/monitor for extended periods of time.
  • (preferred) Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems (steering, braking, suspension, traction/propulsion).



  • Candidate must be attending a 4-year university
  • Candidate must be pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace or Automotive Engineering.
  • Candidate must have a 2.7 GPA on 4.0 scale
