The objective of the Student Programs at Nexteer Automotive is to select students with high potential and provide them with "real world" work experiences. Work assignments expose students to many of the company’s products, processes, and procedures. Assignments are designed to assimilate acquired classroom education with actual hands-on work experience in a technical environment. In addition, Nexteer Automotive gains the opportunity to find new talent to enhance productivity while providing students exposure to full-time career opportunities.

 

The Environmental Sustainability intern (“Intern”) reports to the Global Environmental, Health & Safety Director, assisting on global environmental sustainability projects and key enterprise initiatives at Nexteer. The scope of this position is cross functional, encompassing multi-disciplinary fields, including but not limited to, information systems, environmental, sustainability, and data analytics. The Intern will act as a liaison between relevant corporate functions and divisions to support the enhancement and efficiency improvement of technical analyses and data applications. The intern will review competitor and customer benchmarking for environmental sustainability, with a focus primarily on Asia Pacific (AP) and Europe, Middle East, Africa & South America (EMEA) regions.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the life cycle assessment (LCA) pilot program team on LCA projects, by supporting underlying processes from scope setting, data collection, modeling, calculation, to monitoring and reporting. Define a process and procedure for conducting an LCA.
  • Capture key takeaways and transfer the knowledge from internal and external subject matter experts (SMEs) to enable the organization to achieve its business objectives.
  • Assist benchmarking and data analytics projects, gather additional data for consolidated tracker of resource consumption, carbon emission, and sustainability targets. Intern will collaborate with Information Technology (IT) function to develop visualization tools/ dashboards for business decision-makers.
  • Investigate energy efficiency cost savings initiatives with the latest modern technology available to reduce usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance Nexteer’s environmental sustainability framework, for example, variance and trend analytics of environmental data and metrics, to monitor performance.
  • Conduct exploratory research into the data and metrics, to identify important trends (e.g., renewable energy, recycled material, carbon neutrality) and key action plans to drive efficiency and reduce the overall risks to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).
  • Support communications and presentations to deliver key findings and recommendations for manufacturing plant and senior leadership.

 

Requirements:

  • Candidate must be attending a 4-year university.
  • Candidate must be pursuing a degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
    • Preferred background or working knowledge in Environmental Studies
  • Candidate must be able to work up to 40 hours per week.
  • Must have cumulative 3.0 GPA on 4.0 grade point scale.
  • Must be a full-time student.
  • Experience with data analytics and data visualization (with tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power Bi, and Mini Tab) preferred, but not required. Candidate must, at a minimum, be willing to learn.
  • Ability to interpret and convert data analytics to easily understand business relevancy to stakeholders with various levels of environmental engineering or sustainability knowledge.
  • Knowledge of life cycle assessment and related databases and tools - Knowledge of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol and relevant International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

 

Preferred skills:

  • Working knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) and experience working with relational databases.
  • Experience of building data pipelines for analytics and reporting, while gathering information for benchmarking and competitor analysis.
  • Knowledge of direct greenhouse gas emissions that are owned or controlled by an organization (for example, emissions associated with fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces, vehicles). (Scope 1).
  • Knowledge of indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat, or cooling (Scope 2). 
  • Knowledge of indirect emissions that are the result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by the reporting organization, but that the organization indirectly affects in its value chain. Primarily focusing on knowledge of emissions related to the supply chain (Scope 3) in the automotive industry.
