CAE Analyst - Electrical Hardware Thermal, Structural and Reliability Analysis (2020)

Nexteer is looking for a highly motivated and passionate research/product development engineer with electrical hardware development experience. The candidate will receive design inputs including potential motor designs, performance requirements, electrical schematics, packaging envelopes and operating environments, and in turn will assess the reliability of electronic packages and make proposals on thermal management systems to be incorporated into the designs. This position will interface with cross-functional teams at Nexteer including MCAD, ECAD, electrical circuit design, motors, systems manufacturing and purchasing.

  • Perform structural, thermal and reliability analysis using FEA simulation tools to develop compact and efficient electrical hardware assemblies
  • Conduct optimization studies using FEA tools for compact and efficient design alternatives
  • Work with validation engineers to mimic field tests and eventually minimize physical testing by conducting full scale simulations
  • Develop analytical models capable of providing initial approximations on performance parameters
  • Perform design, material, and component trade-off studies and risk assessment
  • Plan and conduct validation tests; review and interpret results and test data
  • Work with electrical design engineers on loss distribution and thermal management of motor and power electronics
  • Design active cooling features, including requirements for material potting, liquid cooling, forced air cooling, and all mechanical features necessary for these solutions
  • Provide expertise on prototyping techniques and production manufacturing related to heat dissipation
  • Provide initial estimates of design features to electrical and mechanical team during early system design stages
  • Author and review technical documents including analysis reports, procedures, and analysis standard practice guidelines
  • Perform other engineering or support tasks as directed



  • B.S. degree or higher in Mechanical or an appropriate engineering field. Master’s or PhD degree in Reliability Engineering preferred
  • 1+ years of recent analyst experience in a reliability engineering role is a bonus
  • Understanding of accelerated testing methods, governing equations, and physics of failure for different failure mechanism
  • Understanding of applied statistics and reliability statistics (Weibull distribution, Monte Carlo analysis, etc.)
  • Experience with environmental testing including vibration and shock
  • Proficient with ANSYS, Sherlock and ABAQUS
  • Strong working knowledge of CFD analysis and experience with any program (e.g. FloEFD, FloTHERM XT, IcePak) is highly desirable
  • Working knowledge of programming languages, preferably MATLAB and Python
  • Must have hands-on experience of LabVIEW
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to prepare concise presentations for higher level audience
  • Experience working with complex electro-mechanical systems
