Nexteer Automotive Steer-by-Wire engineering team continues to grow and evolve as we work with multiple customers in support of their development.  At the same time the team is developing and refining our own production-intent designs for offering on anticipated upcoming requests for new business.  Steer-by-wire technology is an exciting automotive industry development, gathering considerable interest.  It provides significant benefits for both traditional and autonomously-driven vehicles, being a key enabler for the Nexteer Quiet Wheel technology and seamless transitions between autonomous and human drivers.

 

The Core System Engineer is responsible for the overall Steer-by-Wire system and sub-system development including technical leadership and the flow down of technical requirements to the electrical, mechanical, controls, validation, and software teams. In this role, the Core System Engineer will work with Matlab, Simulink, CAN communication, Doors and Microsoft Office to understand and flow down system requirements. Other activities include trouble-shooting problems in system behavior, which may come from any aspect of the design.  In these activities a strong understanding of mechanics, electronics and embedded software is needed.

 

This position provides the opportunity to develop leading-edge technology which could result in patents.  Through incorporation of internal and customer requirements the candidate will generate and help implement new system functions and work toward requirements that can be met with the lowest cost system.  This position interacts with both internal and external customers to ensure deadlines and requirements are met.

 

This position is located in Saginaw, MI and requires valid driver’s license.

 

Job responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical leadership for projects, such as Demos and Pursuits, incorporating complex mechatronic systems
  • Understanding, developing, and communicating system requirements (internal and external) including the flow down of requirements to various multi-disciplinary engineering teams including system, mechanical, electrical, control requirements and verifying that system-level and safety requirements are met
  • Understanding, optimizing, and developing the overall system design
  • Understands the system through modeling to develop feature, system and sub-system specifications and allocations
  • Complete system verification methods of the mechatronic system and it’s requirements
  • Generating core tuning procedures vehicle steering characteristics, diagnosing, and correcting deficiencies in designs
  • Supporting interfaces simulation models with hardware-in-the-loop setups (internally and externally)
  • Stays abreast of new technology and assist in maintaining cost controls

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Required
  • Competency in vehicle system, mechanical systems, functional safety, and electronic systems
  • Excellent problem-solving techniques
  • Good organization and documentation abilities
  • Experience performing engineering calculations using tools like Matlab/Simulink and spreadsheets (Microsoft Office)
  • Knowledge of system synthesis, analysis, and verification techniques

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Vehicle Dynamics or EPS power steering experience
  • General Controls knowledge
  • Basic Software Programing knowledge (C,C++,ect.)
  • Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems (steering, braking, suspension)
