Laboratory Materials Engineer (2022)

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Conducts problem solving, and provides laboratory analytical support on materials and processes for manufacturing, engineering, and customers to resolve and prevent problems
  • Perform materials analysis and investigations, operate non-routine / advanced analytical equipment, and generate technical reports
  • Develops and maintains material laboratory procedures
  • Designs / builds test fixtures, and conducts tests for materials mechanical property characterization
  • Procures samples for test set up and materials test programs
  • Sets up and operates test devices and measurement tools
  • Gathers and analyzes data, and writes related reports and procedures as required
  • Maintains assigned equipment calibrations, and laboratory operating and test procedures per quality system requirements
  • Frequently exchanges information with others outside the work group
  • Observes safety protocols and practices good housekeeping standards

Major Job Qualifications / Specific Skills



  • Knowledge of metals and their properties, including steel, cast iron, powdered metal, aluminum and stainless steel
  • Basic knowledge of ferrous and nonferrous strengthening mechanisms
  • Understanding of materials related to engineering theory and principles of design
  • Analytical ability where problems are somewhat complex
  • Ability to make sketches, engineering drawings, and common computations
  • Familiarity with basic hand and machine tools
  • Ability to use common measurement tools and techniques
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability and proficiency in computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Access, etc.)


  • Knowledge / experience in conducting testing and analyzing results on metals from:
  • Metallography
  • Chemical analysis including optical emission spectrometer, XRF, EDX, elemental analyzers
  • Mechanical testing including tensile/compression, hardness, instrumented impact, etc.
  • Basic understanding/knowledge of non-destructive testing methodologies 
  • Knowledge / experience in failure analysis, material failure characteristics, fracture morphology, and failure mechanisms via SEM and macroscopic evaluation
  • Experience using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray
  • Corrosion testing experience (salt fog, humidity, cyclic, etc.)
  • Knowledge or experience with ISO 17025, IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality systems requirements

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree with a major in materials engineering, metallurgy, mechanical engineering or similar technical degree
