Laboratory Materials Engineer / Manufacturing Metallurgist (2022)

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Provides testing, problem-solving, and analytical support on materials and processes for, manufacturing, engineering, and customers to resolve and prevent problems.
  • Monitor plant processes, write specifications, monitor chemical safety, confined space, hazardous waste, audits supplier processes, perform chemical management tasks, and develops cost effective processes and materials
  • Develop new material specifications and processes as needed
  • Support raw materials qualification tests for inspection of incoming materials
  • Qualify and audit facilities and products of suppliers of materials and services
  • Responsible for quality, process, and metallurgical requirements of purchased and manufactured components for the manufacturing plant
  • Perform materials analysis and investigations, operate non-routine / advanced analytical equipment, and generate technical reports
  • Develops and maintains material laboratory procedures
  • Designs / builds test fixtures, procures samples and conducts tests for materials mechanical property characterization
  • Maintains assigned equipment PM and calibrations
  • Assist manufacturing engineering by providing technical information required in the design and provision of services and installation of new metallurgical processing equipment
  • Frequently exchanges information with others outside the work group
  • Maintain knowledge of current developments in the metallurgical / materials engineering field
  • Comply with ISO 17025, IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality systems requirements
  • Observes safety protocols and practices good housekeeping standards

 

 

Major Job Qualifications / Specific Skills

Required:

  • Understanding of materials related to engineering theory and principles of design
  • Knowledge of metals (ferrous & nonferrous), their properties and strengthening mechanisms
  • Analytical ability where problems are somewhat complex
  • Ability to make sketches, engineering drawings, and common computations
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and metallurgical lab equipment
  • Ability to use common measurement tools and techniques
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Ability to work independently when necessary

 

Preferred:

  • Familiarization with CQI-9 requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in ferrous metallurgy, heat treat and related processing, testing, and evaluation
  • Ability to evaluate and determine acceptance criteria related to heat treat
  • Knowledge / experience in non-destructive testing
  • Knowledge or experience with ISO 17025, IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality systems

 

Educational Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in materials engineering, metallurgy, mechanical engineering or similar technical degree

 

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in metallurgy or materials related field
