The objective of the Student Programs at Nexteer Automotive is to select students with high potential and provide them with "real world" work experiences. Work assignments expose students to many of the company’s products, processes and procedures. Assignments are designed to assimilate acquired classroom education with actual hands-on work experience in a technical environment. Job Requisition Introductory Paragraph:

This position in the Hydraulic Steering Product Engineering department will provide the student with an opportunity to gain first-hand engineering experience by working directly with both Product Engineers and Validation Laboratory personnel. The student will be expected to perform hands on work with hydraulic power steering pumps and function test equipment. The student will also assist with performing in-vehicle evaluations of hydraulic sub-assemblies. The student should be self-motivated, maintain a strong attention to detail, and possess basic computing skills with core Microsoft Office programs. Students will be asked to complete other miscellaneous tasks and projects as they arise.


Primary Job Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform function check testing on hydraulic power steering pumps to document pump performance
  • Prepare pump test samples for validation testing
  • Assist product engineers with development project studies and problem-solving activities
    • Disassemble and reassemble power steering pumps for analysis and component swaps
    • Perform data acquisition of pump performance using LabVIEW program
  • Create spreadsheets and generate graphs for the measured data using Microsoft Excel
  • Interface with individuals from other functional areas, including manufacturing plants, validation lab, materials lab, auto mechanics, various skilled trade groups, and outside vendors
  • Occasional travel to customer locations to deliver or retrieve hydraulic products
    • Fleet vehicles are available for company travel
  • Additional projects may be assigned to the student, dependent on current business and project needs



  • Candidate must be attending a 2-year college or a 4-year university local to Saginaw
  • Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor Degree in Engineering
    • Mechanical preferred
  • Candidate must be able to work 20-32 hours during Fall and Winter semesters
    • Up to 40 in the summer
  • Must have cumulative 2.7 GPA on 4.0 scale
  • Must be a full-time student (12 or more credits) during Fall and Winter semesters
  • Candidate must have right to work in the US and not require current or future sponsorship
