General Purpose of the Position:

Ensure that all purchased parts assigned to you will fully meet Nexteer expectations by developing a robust supply base capable of meeting cost, quality, launch, and delivery commitments. The Strategic Buyer must identify, develop, and manage the Motor Supply Chain. He or she will help establish our global supply chain strategy, support cross-functional teams during the development and industrialization phases and drive business decisions throughout the product life cycle.


Main Responsibilities

  • Works in cooperation with other Nexteer functions to make the best supplier selection for Nexteer.
  • Create RFQs, review, analyze and clarify quotations from suppliers and develop sound sourcing and business recommendations balancing cost, quality, lead-time and technical considerations to  negotiates contracts for prices and terms with outside suppliers.
  • Develops and maintains sourcing strategies in cooperation with other regions.
  • Follows market price trends and general business activities.
  • Manages supplier commercial issues.
  • Ensures compliance to GSM Policies and Procedures.
  • Establishes Annual Material Budget and performs monthly budget analysis.
  • Manage supplier development and tooling timelines, part availability for prototype builds/start of production and develop solutions to delays or problems that arise.
  • Works with suppliers and Nexteer resources to identify, develop and implement material cost savings.
  • Maintain overall supplier relationships and act as point of contact for all commercial issues, including internal report-outs summarizing sourcing status, cost drivers, and a comprehensive understanding of cost modeling.


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Management, Business, or Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in the automotive industry, preferably in direct material purchasing
  • Experience in buying EPS/steering motors or electromechnical components
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision and technical guidance.
  • Product launch experience preferred.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Good organization and documentation abilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand basic engineering documents.
  • Strong knowledge of the specific commodities, materials, and products being purchased.
  • High analytical ability in complex situations with a strong knowledge of purchasing strategies & skills.
  • Must be able to travel up to 15%.
  • Ability to mitigate unforeseen problems creatively and effectively.
