Systems Engineer - Controls (2022)

We are looking for a technical expert who is well versed in controls, modeling, and vehicle dynamics.  The ideal candidate will have experience with Matlab, Simulink, CAN communication, embedded systems and embedded controls.  Through the integration of internal and customer dynamic performance requirements, the candidate will develop dynamic system models of electric power steering systems and calibrate performance of existing functions.  Additionally, they will generate and troubleshoot new algorithms to enhance system performance.  In this position, there is an opportunity to develop leading edge technology, which could result in patents.  A high level of communication skills, both written and verbal are required as the candidate will interact with internal and external customers to ensure deadlines and requirements are met.


Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design and analysis of the controls of electronic power steering systems using dynamic system modeling and simulation
  • Responsible for developing system features and functions, from proof of concept to production requirements
  • Designs and optimizes multiple system performance goals
  • Provides technical leadership and effectively integrates all aspects of system design through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering
  • Diagnosis of performance issues through data-based root cause analysis, with proposed solutions
  • Develop vehicle models (digital twin) with integrated steering controllers for initial tuning calibration and other virtual engineering efforts
  • Uses rapid prototyping tools for system development
  • Utilize predictive information based on cloud data to improve driver experience
  • Assists in maintaining cost controls
  • Stays abreast of new technology


 Required Skills:

  • Expertise in control theory (e.g. PID, LQR), including state matrices, stability margin, and first principles approach towards development
  • Strong programming and simulation skills (with Matlab/Simulink)
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics (steering, braking, suspension, driveline), mechanical systems, electronic systems, and computer hardware and software
  • Excellent problem solving techniques
  • Good organization and documentation abilities
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time



  • At least 2 years of relevant job experience is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of self-driving cars, including topics such as ADAS sensors, camera, radar, lidar, ultrasonic, model predictive controls (MPC), perception, localization
  • Familiarity with machine learning
  • Familiarity with information exchanges between cloud and onboard controllers, e.g. Microsoft Azure
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, e.g. system “V”
  • Experience with C/C#/Python/ROS
  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (CAN, CAN FD, Flexray) and Vector CANape
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as Simulink Embedded Coder and dSpace MicroAutoBox
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics software tools such as CarSim/Carmaker
  • Background in ride and handling of cars and possess valid drivers license


Educational Requirements:

Master’s Degree (PhD preferred) – Electrical, Mechanical, or Automotive Engineering with an emphasis in controls
